HDMI to HDTV and 5.1 Surround Sound

Hello Everyone. I have a quick question. I am running a NVIDIA 9800GT Video Card and have it connected to my HDTV for Video and Sound. I am looking to buy a surround sound System. I am wondering If I am playing .MKV video files with 5.1 surround sound embedded in the files, if through this connection I will get 5.1 surround sound playback on my surround sound system. Or is it just going to be converted to standard.
Any help would be great.
