Return hubby's well intentioned gift. You can back any of your movies with free software. I f you want to pay for something that is easy and works just about 100% of the time you should get what you've heard gppds things about. AnyDVD and CloneDVD!

Now back to the free stuff. DVDFab clone will rip your dvds free. dvdfab.com you may also purchase their DVD to DVD program. I also have it as well any AnyDVD and Clone.

get Shrink (free) which will shrink your DL DVD to fit a cheap SL DVD. get it here

http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tool...VD-Shrink.shtml

Get free Imgburn it will burn shrink's output and also create ISO for direct 100% copy.

http://www.imgburn.com

these are old links. Not sure they all work

Thanks for the advice. I have DVD shrink but it encounters a problem when I try to use it on newer movies. Also, I thought it wasn't avaliable anymore, have they rereleased it? Dvdfab doesn't work on some of my newer movies either. So is there any free software that works on newer movies? I haven't beenable burn anything in over a year with my old programs.

Shrink will not work on new movies as a ripper. You use free DVDFab as your ripper to get the files to your hard drive then you use Shrink to open those files and burn them with whatever you've been using with shrink. You're 2/3 of the way home already. You have used shrink and have burned the output to DVD, right? All shrink needs is a little help- free FAB or paid for AnyDVD which requires no learning curve-set it forget it update it regularly for new encryptions. It runs in the background and let's Shrink work like it used to. We all still have and use good old shrink from time to time. I mainly use AnyDVD and Nero Recode one button push start to finish once you set each dvd up if you have two burners. With one burner it's a few more steps.

For Fab to work you must update it regularly also. They can be a little slower in update time than AnyDVD but not usually. They must both be updated with the new release versions to do the new movies. So update your Fab and rip with it and use your Shrink 3.2.

Ok, I tried using the Main Movie feature instead of the Full Disc with DvdFab and it copied but Shrink couldn't open it because apparently it copied in IFO format and not ISO, which is what Shrink uses. So now I am stuck and don't know how to fix this one or what to use. HELP PLEASE

Find the files that dvd Fab ripped, they should be video_TS files. Open shrink> click open files and find the folder Fab ripped and select it. Shrink should now open the files and you just run shrink as before. Shrink will work with the files Fab put out and get them to fit a SL5 blank dvd. Burn with whatever program you've been using. Shrink can output ISO or Video-TS files to burn you have to set it for what you want.

Fab also has a free beta program much like anyDVD now. Look for it at Fabs site or google DVDFAB Passkey

Here's alkohol guide here at AD.

Ok, I did all of that with Shrink but when it. Is time to start the backup process then I get the following message:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
The specified folder is invalid.
Access is denied.
What can I do now? Is it Shrink or Fab that is causing the problem? As for the two dvdfabs you mentioned, does one work better then the other? I don't even know what the difference is between the Beta and the Passkey.
I'm such a girl, most of This just goes over my head so thanks for the detailed info and step by step instructions and advice.

I have no idea what is causing problem but here's what will work for sure.

Download free 21 day version of AnyDVD
Install it and reboot
After boot it should appear next to clock as red fox.
load your DVD into your drive and watch the fox bottom right. It will trun grey as it reads the disc. Then back to red.
Now open shrink after fox is red again. Sometimes it will take a min or two.
Click open disc
set your disc size to DVD5 if not already.
continue on like you used to do. AnyDVD has fooled shrink into thinking the dvd is not encrypted
Set your output files to ISO or Video_TS files
Burn Shrink's output to DVD5
Enjoy back up

You will buy AnyDVD after you have used it. There is nothing to learn just have it running when you want to back up anything in Shrink.

Also try CloneDVD both of these are from Slysoft.com and have free trials. Nothing is easier than AnyDVD and CloneDVD for backing up a movie. But after 21 days you must pay. you will.

Oh my goodness! Do I have the worst luck in the world? Dvdshrink is still giving me the same error message:
encountered an error and cannot continue
the specified folder is invalid
access is denied
the only thing I did was use anydvd and make sure the settings were like you said. Shrink or my computer or anydvd named the file/folder that I am not able to open. Is there even anything else I can do? Thanks, sorry if I am being difficult. I really do appreciate all the help, thanks again, Kim

What are you trying to copy anyway??? Have you checked the disc is it clean, scratched?

Trying to backup my Scrubs season 8 discs. They appear to have no scratches and I always wipe them off before I put them into the drive.

Try backing up a store bought recent movie with DVDFab or AnyDVD Serial discs can be somewhat troublesome.

I use anyDVD and Nero Recode to do serial discs just episodes only to keep compression manageable/. AnyDVD and Clone will also do them. But try a single new movie first to make sure the set up is correct. If you can't do a single movie, you won't be able to do series discs.

Ok, I will try that with my next new movie. Thanks, I didn't even realize that could be a problem.

you don't have a dvd at your house now that is a year old or so can try?
#19 17 Jun 2010 @ 17:55
I sure do. Had a brain fart there! Guess it wouldn't have to be my next new release I buy. Had a blonde moment there. I am blonde so I can say that. I will try one now. Transformers should be ok, even though I have a backup already, my kids love it.

You don't actually have to burn the disc just cancel the burn when it asks you for the disc. If you get that far it should burn. good luck
