I'm looking to combine my laptop and PS3 to have a media server. I want to rip my DVD collection to a format that looks good on my 1080p 40" tv.
What are the best settings / programs?

i have a lot of dvds - specifically box sets. I'd love to stream them from an external hd on my laptop but is this wishful thinking trying to get hundreds of hours onto a 500GB hd? is there an alternative to using my laptop/external hd combo?
