Optimal encodings for XBMC on Zotac Mag Mini

I have a Zotac Mag Mini that on which I'm running XBMC live 10. I was hoping someone here has the same (or similar) HTPC and that they might be willing to share what file formats and encodings were optimal for this hardware/software. My first attempt at ripping and encoding my DVDs (both movies and TV mini-series) and BDs resulted in some pretty mixed results. I am also considering upscaling the videos apriori and storing them on my NAS that way so that the Zotac have to work less at playback time.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
