When I try to rip The Simpsons Movie to an ipod compatible format vlc media player doesn't close automatically but shows the same screen it does when you first open it. When I try to play the mp4 the video and sound works until about the second half when only the video works.
I am using VLC media player 1.0.

this is a commercial dvd disk? .. try using some decrypting rippers etc a found under the dvd ripping guides first.. then avidemux will be always a better option.
I don't think that that is the problem as vlc plays the dvd fine. VLC for linux seems to have less glitchy transcoding for some reason. I mostly use Gourdian Knot, mplayer/mencoder/ffmpeg, and handbrake now.
