What do I need to convert DVD files for WD HD TV Media Center

Okay, I'm new to this. I've been reading and reading and reading and I finally gave up and decided to post a question. I have ripped my dvd collection to a HD using DVD decrypt and I recently purchased a WD HD TV Media Center box to use with a WD 1 tb external HD. When I try to play something back it plays the one chapter and goes back to the menu of the WD HD box. What would be a good way to convert these files to a file that would play the entire DVD without stopping after a chapter? What is the best quality format for regular DVD's with this system and what software do you recommend for doing this. I have searched the forums, and I am a noob at this, so I appologize up front if this has been covered and I just couldn't find it.

I have actually found out what is working best for me. There is a program called "MakeMKV" and I have been converting all my DVD files to .mkv format and it seems to have great quality and takes no time at all to convert the files. I tried .avi and didn't get the quality I was looking for. .MKV compresses it slightly but storage space wasn't really an issue for me. Might try it and see how you like it.
