i have had my dell dimension 9200 for about 2 years and i almost always leave it on, or in standby over night. But when i came home yesterday, the computer was powered off and it had an orange flashing light on the front. I checked on the dell support website and this meant that power was not getting to the computer. When i tried to press the button, the fan on the graphics card started up and then stopped again then started up again, but nothing else started.
I tried to unplug everything except my hard drive with the OS on, 1 stick of ram (then the other, and my graphics card. Nothing worked.

so i left it unplugged. when i came back to it and plugged it back in the amber light had stopped flashing and when i pressed the power button nothing happened at all.

I really dont know much about computers but i would guess that this was a power surge (since i dont have an inhibitor).

is this a problem with the power supply? and if it is can i fix it or do i need to buy a new power converter thing.

    Thanks.

Most likely the power supply has died or is dying.

You might be able to use an off the shelf power supply. You will have to check the size and connectorization
