I have an Hp Pavilion dv6000 laptop. since there are around 3 different dv6000's out there mine comes with the Processor is AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile technology TL-56 1.80GHz with 2.00 Ram. Whether or not the Dvd/Lightscribe drive has a cd in or not, the drive sometimes randomly opens by its self. I went under device manager and disabled it and yet it still did it. With that i uninstalled the drive and it still popped open. This is why i came here and hopefully there will be a solution to this. Thanks for any help
Laptop drives have a different locking mechanism than desktop optical drives. I would suspect that the latch mechanism is mechanically broken or out of adjustment. Since this is probably a mechanical issue, there is nothing in software that you can do to stop it. You should consider replacing the drive is it really bothers you or tape it shut.
It should be user removable. Check the user's manual to see. Once you remove the optical drive, fine out the make and model number.
Actually sometimes it is a software issue.. some drm's will cause the drive to eject as a potential anti-rip protection method.. Haven't seen it personally with a laptop but a tower running suse did this within seconds of attempting to play an audio cd.
i will say it is mechanical as there is no disk in drive when it pops open & have seen it do that with my stepfather's laptop when it wasn't even turned on.
That's what i started to think about as well. It doesn't pop open every single time but it does open on random points through out the day. Now i'm not sure if its does it because it gets to warm or what, but it is getting annoying. I'll check my owners manual to see if i can find anything about the type of drive it is. All i can find under Device Manager is "HL-DT'ST DVDRAM GSA=4084N ATA Device" not sure if thats any help or not
That's a lot of help actually.. confirms a shoddy quality control fail piece of hardware... replace it with something branded.. a pioneer or similar if possible.
don't buy the drive from hp as you'll might pay as much as what the laptop cost. had to get a customer a new battery for her hp laptop & hp wanted $177 to $195 for the battery but got a new 1 from china thru ebay for $55. same battery with same molder faceplate as would have got from hp.

Hey thanks once again DDP. But what i don't understand is that it works normal. When i have a game and playing, the drive doesn't pop out, so what exactly should i be looking for once i take the drive out?
then that is different from what you said in your 1st post. start looking for a virus as 1 of them does that at least for desktops so presume same for laptops. see if drive does same on another laptop if possible.
well i don't have another laptop to test it on. I did however take the drive out and inspected all the parts that i could visually see without taking every piece apart and everything seemed to be intact. What would you recommend as a virus scanner as i don't like norton nor mcafee.
I've got the same laptop, the drive pops out nice and easy with just one screw removed. Different laptop drives are differnt sizes, it will be tricky to get one that is flush like the stock drive. Some will be recessed slightly, others will stick out. Some can have the old drive faceplate attached easily while others will only work with the faceplated they come with. Simply: It is very easy to replace the drive, and very difficult to make it look good when you are done.
