external hardisc 250 gb not functioning

The external hardisc of 250 gb is functioning on some laptops and pcs where as not functioning on some others ? what could be the reason. If the entire memory of the external hardisc is being used will it effect the readibility of the external hardisc on laptops and pcs ?

it could be a power problem
front usb's and laptop usb's often have less actual power to drive hdd's than they need
try with a separate power supply
