Do you have a set of Sony install disks so you can re-format and re-install?

I have contacted sony for those discs and they won't be shipped out until the first of dec, I was looking into just buying a new hard drive because now its saying everytime I start it up that a fatal error was made, so do I just get a new hard drive and the recovery discs and start fresh? thank you for your help

You might want to restore to a new hard drive to avoid overwriting any of your files/favorites/etc...but from the sounds of it, your current hard drive is not damaged. Seems to just be a windows issue as a result of a virus.

sweetie45, what is the model# of that sony viao? what windows are you using? if fairly new computer then there is most likely a recovery partition on the hd to reload windows back to factory defaults as there was on my viao laptop.

I have tried that, it is a sony vaio vgn fs790 it is an older model of the vaio's and is not under any warrenty's any more I have tried to restore the windows using the vaio recovery and have tried a c-drive recovery, now here I am asking for help to get this thing running again this is what started the whole problem I downloaded a program from regcure to help my virtual memory and thus the problems started missing files and deleted files, it was running slower and slower, and then it would not let me load up my norton 360 so what do I do now? buy the recovery discs and redo them or replace the hd or just toss it out?

It just needs a new clean install .. actually very simple, but I think it has a sata hdd so you will need to use nmap to build a custom install xp (why people use this shite is a mystery) with the sata hdd drivers installed.

I could do it all.. including all the drivers in about 40 mins.. It isn't going to run fista or that garbage people are hyping called 7 so don't even think about it..

Last one of these that came my way went off running Dreamlinux.. everything working, looked like a mac XD

Actualy, that system will run Vista/Win7. Sony even posts vista drivers on their website (they are all outdated, so get them from somewhere else). I think XP should install without having to make a custom disk...virtualy all non-RAID chipsets will work without a driver for the XP install.

Don't listen to scum...he is a linux fanboy who probably hasn't even tried out Win7.

As for Vista? Yeah, vista sucks.

oi killerbug .. M$ shillboy.. I'm sick of hearing your BS.. I was trying to help.. if that $ony lump of shit is to run xp then it WILL need a nlite custom home made xp install disk with the sata drivers added.

I have seen stacks of broken and screwed update win7 .. it's just as crap as fista.. and has EVEN LESS features and more potentially invasive DRM .. as people will find out in due course.. as every retail outlet is now forcing this garbage down peoples throats instead of fista.

1.) It came with XP and a boatload of bloatware...if it ran like that, then it will run with Windows 7 (the drivers are available). I don't see why you think it needs an nLite disc, unless you think that the drivers integrated by nLite are useable durring install (they are not).

2.) I have not tried the updater myself, as the updaters are usualy bad. The whole point of installing Windows 7 is to get rid of the problems caused by Vista, so it is silly to try to install over it!

3.) Sorry about the gender mistake...I've never met a woman who would call herself scum before. My mistake.

4.) While windows 7 does have many more features than vista (you just have to know where to look), the main advantages are speed and reliability. If you came to the conclusion that there are fewer features, then you didn't give Win7 much of a chance. I might as well install Linux without a GUI and say "it has no features, just a place to type commands".

5.) I assume you are talking about the DRM of windows marketplace and media player 11...two things that are junk and go unused anyway. Well, if someone was crazy enough to want these, they could get them in XP as well...they could probably even get them to run under linux with a bit of work. If you fear microsoft's potential for DRM that much, then just use VLC or something...it is better anyway.

6.) Windows 7 isn't being forced by any means. It is the best version of windows since 2000, and people actualy want these systems. Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, and Vista were all crammed down the public's throats...in spite of terrible reviews. Windows 7 has great reviews, and it has earned them.

7.) I'm no microsoft fanboy. I slam the xbox360, Vista, and Office every chance I get. However, PC gaming requires windows...linux just won't run the newest games, no matter what you try. Neither will Snow Leapord. The only choice is windows. Since 32-bit operating systems are useless to me, and I can't find working XP64 drivers for many parts, this leaves only Vista64 and Win7x64. In this fight, I am a win7 fanboy. I still don't consider Windows 7 to be a good platform, just the best overall platform for my needs.
