Looking to upgrade my hdd to 1tb

#1 05 Aug 2011 @ 22:20
Currently I have a 500gb 7200rpm 2.5" 9.5mm drive in my laptop, I believe its a toshiba drive. I'm looking to buy a 1tb as I'm running low on space (less than 80gb left)
From looking around I can only find 1tb 2.5 drives at 5400 rpm with 8mb of cache.
If I were to buy the drive with those specs would I notice the difference? I'm a engineering major in college so I use rather intensive programs.

build is:
Core i7 Q720
6gb ddr3 ram
Ati 5700 series 1gb dedicated
500gb 7200rpm
