what is the make & model# of the computer or motherboard? from what you posted you have a p4 or similar amd type with maybe sdram of 1-256meg & 1-128meg sticks. they could also be ddr(unlikely) but not ddr2 ram.

Here are the specs for your computer. Please write them down in case you have to ask for help in the future.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...2849&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

    Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0 GHz:
    Memory Installed 512 GB (1 x 512)
Maximum allowed 2.0 GB (2 X 1 GB) requires the replacement of the installed 512 MB DIMM
    Speed supported PC3200 MB/sec
    Type 184 pin, DDR SDRAM
    DIMM slots Two
    Open DIMM slots One

You need PC3200 (DDR400) DIMMs, which can be installed singly or in pairs. If you only have 384MB you have 1 x 128M and 1 x 256MB.

You can upgrade to 2 x 1GB for 2GB total, but trust me, it won't make THAT computer much faster.

dailun, being healthym is supposed to have 512meg but shows 384meg then missing 128meg is assigned to onboard video.

healthym, get 2-512meg drr sticks as will see noticeable improvement in speed. did that on a hp with 512meg that i upgraded to 1gig.

    ddp,

As always, thanks for the catch.

PC3200 is so cheap nowadays he may as well go to 2GB.

dailun, ran into that 384meg thing on customers' computers when it has 512meg shown in bios but 384 in windows. 1gig ddr goes for about $40Can.
