I have an Hp pavilion a1253w, AMD 64 Athlon with a an ATI Raedon Xpress 200. Yes I know this computer is ancient, but it is useable. I want to play Sims 3, my ram, and processor speed are fine. Graphics are not supported. I need to upgrade cheaply. Any ideas?
First you need to find out what kind of graphics card slot you have. ok problem not solved. My mother gave me a graphics card, I don't know what it is, it came out of her Dell. It plugs in to my slot, but because my graphics are integrated?? it creates a conflict. I have been in bios but there is no turn off feature, for onboard graphics. I am really at a loss here. I have no idea what to do. Any ideas???? Thank You
Does the new graphics card not work when it is plugged into your computer. You dont always have to disable the on board graphics, sometimes it just switches automatically.

no the Dell G-Card did not work. It would shut down my ATI Graphics, leaving me with none at all. It plugs into the PCIE, I have switched Bios to PCIE, but my monitor will not come on at that point. Ok, so basically what you are telling me is that I need to clear the Bios, by turning off the computer, unplugging, and "Jumping" I see how its done, just don't understand lingo. Then turning computer back on with G-card installed, entering Bios directly and switching to the PCIE, and this will disable the integrated graphics and allow the new graphics to take affect? You could try resetting the bios but I am not sure that it would work. It is worth a try though. Are you sure that the dell graphics card is functional? Does it work in any other computers?
well clearing the Bios didn't work. I don't know. It should switch automatically, but it doesn't. The card was working in the other computer, so its a good card. Maybe its too big for my processor? Thank You for all your help. I Love this website.
If that didn't work then I am not sure what to do? Maybe there is a bios option that you looked over?
using onboard video, go into the bios & change video from onboard to pcie. shutdown the computer, install the dell card, connect the monitor cable to dell card & repower up the computer.
I had all that figured out. I finally found out the type of card it is. It is an ATI Raedon X1300 Pro 256 mb, which needed an installation disk. I was able to download the ATI Catalyst for it, and voila, I now have great graphics. I was under the assumption that G-Cards were plug and play, guess not. Thank You guys for putting up with this newbies lack of knowledge. You guys are great. Happy New Year.
