Can anyone tell me what is causing my Desktop PC to shutdown immediately after powering it up. The scenario was that upon powering up, the PC attempted to boot, then shut down. Then I tried again & the fans run, but nothing else happens. I then have to hold down the power button to force it to shut down. I did notice that the green light on the power supply unit turns off as soon as the pc's power button is pressed. Any ideas?
caps as in capacitors. they are those silver top cans on the motherboard & power supply that if domed or leaking brown stuff can do all kinds of problems for computers.
Upon opening tower, the mother board has a few of the same caps gone bad. Is it worth the trouble to replace caps or is it time to replace a five year old desktop?
I have ordered some Rubycon MCZ caps. I guess I'm up to the challenge. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
how are you going to do it, cut the cans apart & solder to the leads or desolder old caps & solder new caps in place of old?
I am going to heat the old solder, pull the old ones out, replace & resolder the new ones. I will desolder only if I have too.
watch the ground planes on the motherboard that the 1 side of the capacitor is attached to as it absorbs a lot of heat before the solder melts. make certain new cap is oriented same way as old 1 was as in positive to positive & negative to negative.
