Basically lately my pc has been hit and missy when starting. Sometimes it starts up no problem then other times when I turn the pc on i get 3 or 4 beeps. I have looked into these beeps but cant fathom what the problem is as my knowledge is limited. It could be a total coincidence but the problem seem to start the same time I installed a new processor fan, I also looked into this and followed the recommended steps of double checking to make sure the fan is seated properly and all wires etc were fitted correctly. Also on start up the message '512 chassis fan not detected' flashes up but im sure i can here the fan working. When i get the start up beeps as i mentioned earlier it seems that the fan doesnt start up. Like a said it could be a coincidence but im unsure of what else to do now. Any help or advice would be appreciated....cheers
So you didn't replace the CPU heatsink or anything, just the fan? Where did you plug it in to? Do you have any other fans hooked up at the moment, and are they working/where are they plugged in on your motherboard?
If by the heatsink you mean the metal looking thing holding the fan then yes. I bought the whole thing as one. The whole thing then attached to the motherboard right above what ive been told is the processor chip i think using the existing holes from the old one. Then the wire from that connects to the motherboard using the 4 pin slot. If it makes any difference my old connector had 4 holes to connect to the 4 pins if you know what i mean, but when i bought the new one it only has 3 pins. I remember noticing this in the shop and asking the lad in the shop about it and he said it shouldnt matter as they only fit in one way anyways. As far as I know of I have one other fan and that is based in the PSU and working. Hope this helps...thanks
Yes, the heatsink is placed above the processor and the larger onces have a fan which clips to the side, for example. How did you go about replacing this? Your fan should be plugged in to CPU_FAN (labelled on your motherboard as such), which is a 4-pin connector, but like you've been told they're backward compatible. Below is how it should be connected, but you shouldn't be able to put it on any other way due to the shape of the connector. Where was your old fan connected to? Check that the fan wires aren't lose at all etc.
