PS2 Modchip that won't boot PS1 games?

#1 08 Nov 2009 @ 18:00
I've tried doing a search across these forums and on Google and came up with nothing, so I thought I'd try asking here.

Background:
I got my Slim PS2 modded at some store about half a year ago. It played backups and originals of PS2 games (local and import) just fine, but it has many peculiarities that I just cannot figure out. Essentially, my mission is to find out what modchip was installed in my PS2 so I have somewhere to begin my research about it.

I know the best way is to go back and ask what chip they installed, but when I tried calling them, they just said that they don't do mods anymore and wouldn't continue on the subject. I don't really want to open the PS2 in case I break something, either.

The Problem:
I want to find out more about the chip because I've run into a few problems that could probably be dealt with if I could look up the functions of the chip.
- The PS2 is stuck in PS2 mode - it reads all discs as PS2 games, and therefore can't play PS1 games (I get the red screen). I haven't tried a DVD yet, but I assume it won't work. The reason is that when I enter the browser, and I insert a PS1 disc, the disc is labelled as a "Playstation2 Game".
- When I turn on the system with a disc in it, and the lid open, the disc spins - with the lid open!!
- I don't think it supports multiple-disc games. When I tried doing the disc swap for Samurai Warriors 2: Xtreme Legends to load the Samurai Warriors 2 original content, the disc wouldn't stop spinning so I couldn't take it out.

I figured that these aspects about my PS2's behaviour aren't common among modchips, so someone who's more knowledgeable than I am might be able to suggest what chip it might be. All recent chips that I've researched have direct boot and automatic detection of all disc types.

The main reason I'm interested is because I want to play PS1 games.

If it helps, before I modded, I asked about what chip they used, and the guy mentioned something about "Either Modbo or _____ (couldn't hear), depending on the version." It doesn't seem to be Modbo because Modbo has direct boot/auto detection of all disc types, but maybe it's an older version?

Thanks for any help!

Well it is hard to say what modchip you have unless you do take it apart.

Even the old modbo 2.1 had automatic detect

You could try pressing circle when booting to see if it will put it in psx/dvd mode

Or try hitting reset twice when first loading.

Other than that I am not sure.
