Best way to softmod a PS2 so you can play backups

I am looking into buying a PS2 and softmodding it so that I can play downloaded backups. I have read through the forums for several hours trying to find out the best way to softmod a PS2. I have looked into Swap Magic with both the fliptop and slide tool, booting from an external hard drive, etc. Which way is the best? What PS2 model should I use? What is the best method to go about softmodding it? What version of the softmodding tool is best? (for instance there are multiple versions for Swap Magic and there are a couple ways of doing it (fliptop and slide tool))

Swap Magic ehhhh Free McBoot Is Easier To Me
I Would Get A Phat Ps2 With Network Adapter And Hdd Its Faster Then Usb Hdd And Try To Get A Newer Model PS2 Also If Ur Lookiin To Play Ur Back Ups Of PSX Games

I have acquired an older PS2, a SCPH-30001. I would like to softmod it using a method that doesn't require disks if possible as the optical drive seems to be going bad. If anyone knows of a cheap way to this please help me.
