COD5 World at war wont load when memory card is in!

Hi All, not backed up a PS2 game for a while now, did COD5 and when the game started it hung at the first memory card check, thinking it was a bad burn i did another but still same thing, after a bit of trial and error i booted the game without the memory card in and it worked fine, however no autosave :-(

The memory card works fine with other games, so is there anything new with protection on the latest games which would cause this problem?
