I am attempting to backup a DVD I own. I am using DVD Shrink 3.2 to rip the movie. I create the backup with no problems. I insert it into my DVD player and everything seems fine. After around half an hour of watching my movie it either freezes or takes me back to the main menu.
It appears I can watch the movie without errors on my computer.
Is there some setting I am missing on the DVD Shrink? I have used this program before and never had a problem.
Try Burning at 1/2 the rated speed of the Blank media.
Set the target area in shrink to 4300.
Don't Multi-task while burning.
Use Quality Media. (Verbatim)
Use a higer quality media.
Burn at 8X speed.
Don't Multi task.
Rip the Movie with DVDFab.
Compress your target area with DVD Shrink (Custom Ratio) around 4,300MB
Burn with ImgBurn, Nero, etc.
Since lately 1/2 of the DVD's "Movies only" are coming with a Target Area bigger that 5GB, if you do not Compress: DVD Shrink will have a hard time to try to fit a +5GB Video info into a DVD5 (4.7GB) space: That's why The Movie Freeze usually after the middle of the Movie, 'cos the movie is burn "to tackle together" into a smaller space.

Another one of your inaccurate bits of advice i see. What a load of codswallop. Looks like i'd best start keeping an eye on the rest of your posts.
devault24 - Thread title renamed from "Newbie needs help DVD shrink problem" which in a forum of the same name is as bad as "Please Help". In future please see here re thread titles ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/440385 ..and thread teleported to a more relevant forum.
After back-up and burn more that 4,000 diff. Movies into a DVD5 (Using diff. Media Brands) "Old and most of the New Movies" My simple conclusion is:
1.-I only select "Movie Only" 'cos I do not have time to watch xtra's or how is making, or wherever.
2.- "ONLY" those new movies that are coming on a doble-Leyer DVD's and the "Movie Only" is bigger that wherever fit into a DVD5 (4.38GB's) IF I DO NOT COMPRESS; using "Custom Ratio" at around 4,300MB on Shrink or using other programs. The Movie get Burn "Yes": But when you watch the back-up DVD: START FREEZING usually before the end of the Movie. Not all the times, but most of the times.
My explanation was very simple or maybe like you say "Inaccurate"
I LIKE YOUR ANSWER........BUT:
I would like to "HEAR" or "TEACH US" Your "Technical expert" explanation on:
Why the Back-up Movie Freezes or even more, have Pixelation through the back-up DVD Movie ?
It's really very simple and proven. Pixellation can be one of two things (that i know of, i can't think of anything else at the moment). One is compressing the movie too much ie the pixellation is in effect a visual symptom of what looks like 'corrupted' data. This is why recopying a disc that has this type of pixellation will copy ok but the new copy exhibits exactly the same pixellation ie there's no actual data corruption - a CRC scan wouldn't flag up any errors corresponding to the pixellation. A great analogy i have is watching digital TV (i don't know nor care about how TV signals/transmission works, i'm a simple guy); in simple terms i equate this pixellation type to watching digital TV when the picture breaks up. The source data ie the 'transmission' isn't corrupt, it's your lack of signal or something in between the broadcaster and you, or whatever, that results in a pixellated movie or program. An example that springs to mind (for me anyways) is the X Factor, on Freeview here in the UK. Whenever the camera zooms around quickly the picture breaks up.
The other is burning too close to the edge of a disc. The outer edge is where the dye potentially isn't spread evenly so a solution (apart from using good discs, though that doesn't guarantee against manufacturing mistakes) is to burn a bit further away from the edge. I don't profess to be any expert in the way discs are made nor do i actually care how they are made, suffice it to say that one way to avoid problems is to stay away from the edge of a disc where potentially the greatest risk of problems lies. Years ago i swore by 4300MB so as to avoid the edge of the disk, but for longer than i remember i've been using 4400MB (4464MB or thereabouts is the maximum burnable limit on a disc).
Of course discs can have manufacturing mistakes elsewhere on the disc surface ie we've all seen little blobs or whatever on or in other parts of the odd disc, and of course some problems are caused by user error ie multitasking when their system/setup isn't up to the job of protecting against said multitasking thus resulting in playback or recopying problems which are categorically proven when you do CRC scans as CRC is corruption in the data recorded to the disc.
Trying to rip a disc that has physical damage ie scratches or whatever is manifested in CRC errors, as CRC = data corruption. (sorry if you already know that, i always word posts such that they are helpful to people outside of the thread).
So.. my issue was with the wording of this bit

~ i interpret that as you saying that the reason movies freeze is due to compressing the movie after the middle of the disc/movie. Which isn't true (if that's what i think you're saying) as there's no difference with either the first 'half' of the disc or the second 'half' in regards to how video is compressed. This problem is simply down to burning too close to the edge of a disc that isn't physically able to hold the data, for example due to inconsistent dye spread near the outer edge of the disc.
Maybe i'm misinterpreting what you were trying to say, maybe not.
Phew, i'm out of breath now :).
p.s. Movie only mode is also what i swear by, unless it's a concert or episodic disc (and for those i only use DVD Rebuilder).
Anyways, my "Looks like i'd best start keeping an eye on the rest of your posts." may seem a little harsh, it's all about getting the right information out there. I'm always happy to have people correct me if i'm wrong, i'm only human :) but i hope i've described things correctly above, i think i have.
