DVDShrink creating .rar files

every time i try to backup the dvd files and create a .iso image file, it consistently keeps creating a rar file, which i can't burn to the dvd for playback...

You elect to Backup as an iso file, browse to a location, select name.iso and you get name.rar as the output?
If you unzip the .rar file, what's inside?

Many compressors (winrar, 7zip, etc) can open an .iso and when they install the program, they just allow that program access to everything. So its still an .iso as DVDshrink doesnt create .rar, it only has the same icon as a rar.

It just so happens when you install Winrar and do not bother to check which extensions are associated with it by default which among others is ISO.

I know, my emphasis however was on "do not bother to check".
