Hey guys, its great to be back - havnt been on these forums in a VERY long time!

Im no stranger to the homebrew/modding scene - familiar with the wii, ps2 and ds, however im getting a psp this friday (i believe its the old model, not the slim or anything) and i was just hoping that i could get a few tips from all you guys and gals.

Firstly, my main use for it is to be able to run games/movies off of a memory stick, my friend used to have a modded psp (im not sure, but i think its custom firmwares or something (if anyone could explain, that'd be great)) and hes got iso's or whatever for games that he owns but he no longer has a psp.

So my main questions are to know - will i have to downgrade the firmware in order to run games, will i be able to play games online/local multiplayer without the umd, will i be able to connect my psp to my ps3 for remote play... (i dont know, it looks kinda cool!) with the modified firmware and really just any tips that you guys want to share for a newbie coming to the scene... dont be afraid to get technical as like i said im no stranger to the bigger picture!

Thanks alot everyone,
Ben

First, custom firmware is a modded firmware version that can run homebrew, ISO's (downloaded games), stuff like that. You can run movies off your memory stick without custom firmware, but you will need it to run games off your memory stick.

Now your questions..

1. Depends on what firmware the PSP is running. If it's running official firmware then yes, your going to have to downgrade it to be able to play games off your memory stick. You can downgrade and install custom firmware by using a Pandora's battery (You can find guides all over these forums)

2. Yes. You can play online/multiplayer without the UMD.

3. Yes you can connect to your PS3 for remote play. Although it's really not as cool as it seems as there is really nothing to do IMO.

Really all you need to do is get your PSP and see what firmware version it is running and then if you need help with stuff, then people can help you once you find that out.

And just in case your not aware, you can check the firmware version by going over to systems settings and looking at the system info. I hope I helped you out at least a little. Post back with more info. :)

Thanks alot for all the informationn!
just a few more questions (i cant be too specific about the firmware as i dont actually have the psp with me, ill have it tommorow).

Im aware that when new games come out, they do have firmware updates on them etc etc. does that mean the majority of new games will not be playable without a UMD (with the downgraded firmware)?

In order to get up and running with running things off the memory stick, what do i need, ive read around that you can ?make? a pandoras battery with a magic memory stick or something? sorry if im wrong hehe! obviously youll need a memory stick to run the games off etc but do i need anything else?

Thats really it for now, thanks again for the reply,
Ben

As long as your custom firmware is updated to the firmware that the games calls for (or a later version) then you will be able to run the game no problem..

As for the stuff you'll need.. All you'll have to do is downgrade your PSP using a Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick, then you can install custom firmware. Once you have custom firmware installed, you can run ISO's from your memory stick without any other software. All you'll have to do from this point is just download the game and place it in your ISO folder, and it's as simple as that.

so i wouldnt be updating it via the games/iso's but throught the custom firmware? ok great.

Ive got the psp with me now, i need to buy a memory stick, but apart from that i should be fine? i rbought it off a friend who actaully had a problem with it, he turned it on - the green light came on but a black screen, he didnt mod it or anything etc - but it seems to have sorted itself out now. its an old model but its got version 3.51 as firmware? is that bad, as i think thats a new one... will it still be ok?

EDIT: also just to double check with what you said earlier, in order to play online/with others via ad-hoc, theres nothing that needs to be done to the psp/iso when playing backups?

Thanks again for the help,
Ben

you're okay with that firmware version. Just go to the stickies at the top and use one of Larry's guides. You will probably end up using pandora to get the job done.

Nah.. All you do is just put the ISO on there and play it and you'll be able to play online just fine. I had a Socom Fireteam Bravo 2 ISO on my PSP forever before I got my PS3. It played online just as good or better than a UMD. So you shouldn't have any problems there.

ok, fair enough, i decided that i wasnt up for hard-modding the battery, so i brought a battery tool (the one that converts it to service mode and back again). should have that on monday, and ive already preped the magic memory card.

Is it wise to keep a UMD in the PSP when running ISO's or is that not a problem? Also, do you guys have any tips for when i get my 8gb memory card opf how to set it up to run in the PSP?

Again, thanks so much for your help,
Ben

As far as the UMD goes, you don't have to have one in there while your playing your ISO's, although it doesn't really matter. But I always keep one in there so whenever I get bored playing my ISO game, I can just switch to my other game on my UMD.

oh ok, fair enough, ill probably do that as ive got GTA here and i might as well just keep it in there!

is there any format to how the memory card should be created, i know you have to make a GAME folder or something, and all iso's placed in there, but does anything else need to be on there, and any specific structure?

EDIT: Also, ive been reading the sticky guide (Everything you want to know about the PSP), and i saw one of the questions about playing PSP games online, i know you guys have told me its fine, but they say you have to flash your router? is that an outdated guide/not relevant to me, or what?

On top of that, are the games region free, do i have to get EUROPEAN games if i have a PAL PSP, or is it fine for USA ones?

Thanks,
Ben

Once you get your custom firmware installed, you can just format your memory stick from your PSP and it will create all the folders that you will need and place them in their right directory.

As far as router flashing goes, I don't think that's relevant to you. I've never flashed my router and my online games are just perfect. So I don't think you'll have to worry about that.

oh right, so thats fine then. I mean, ive followed Larry's guide on the pandora battery/magic memory card, so im getting my battery today and ive already created the mmc. All I do is put the memory card in and the battery and follow those instructions, then i can just update from "network update" in the xmb on the cf.

What do you guys think about ISO's and CSO's, which is better, i know CSO's are smaller, but does that mean theyre slower because theyre compressed?

Thanks,
Ben

CSO's are smaller and therefor take up less space. However, since they are compressed, they do take a little longer to load. There's really not that big a difference in the quality of the game, but here's my experience with CSO's and ISO's.

Downloaded Socom Fireteam Bravo 2- ISO:
- Good quality
- Runs smooth, just like I had the UMD
- Some audio loss (bad rip maybe?)

Downloaded the same game in CSO format:
- Good quality, some blurriness in the pixels that I didn't notice in my ISO
- Some audio loss (single player only though)
- Runs smooth, really not that different from the ISO.

It won't make that big a difference really. But just go with what you feel comfortable with.
