Its fine. PSPs are region free for all games. The firmmare updates are the same for all regions. It wasn't always the case but thats a standard now. Take for example that you bought the newest US PSP game that reguires you to update firmware first from the UMD even though you have a Japanese PSP, you can update without worry that it wont be compatible.

There are some differences like the default language settings is japanese but this can be easily changed. The default confirm button is circle and X for cancel.

As for UMD movies, they are not region free. If you have a japanese PSP buying a US Hulk UMD movie is a bad idea.

The newest model now is the PSP 3000. Soon the PSP Go will launch and it will have a different look and a steeper price and without a UMD drive. The PSP GO can only play games that you buy from the Playstation Network(PSN). So i think the PSP 3000 is best because of UMD and if you have a decent size memory stick buying games from PSN is fine too.
