AVG 9 Firewall blocks media streaming from PC to XBOX 360.. Please help!

#1 08 Nov 2009 @ 21:46
Hi folks, I'm sure hoping someone can help me out here..

I've been attempting to stream the media from my WinXP PC to my Xbox 360 using Windows Media Player 11, and the only way it will work is if I have my AVG Firewall turned off.

Now before someone yells "this problem has been addressed noob!" please be aware that I've attempted to find the solution for several hours before posting. On AVG's website as well as many others, the stock solution is as follows:

1. Open AVG -> menu Tools -> Firewall settings.
2. Open section Profiles -> your profile -> Applications.
3. Click Add button -> "..." button next to the Path.
4. Browse to: c:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe
5. Make sure that Application action is set to Allow for all and click Apply.
6. In the left tree, please switch to application Various system services.
7. In the Application detail rules click on Add button and then click Move up button until the new entry (represented by a number, e.g. 12) is on the first place in the list.
8. Set Detail action to Allow for all.
9. In Defined services click on Add service.
10. Fill in the service name (e.g. XBOX) and click Add button.
11. Fill in the following settings of the rule:
* Protocol: TCP
* Direction: Both ways
* Local ports: 2869
* Remote ports: *
12. Click OK to store the newly created rule and also the service.
13. In the list of Defined services, please scroll down to the created XBOX service and tick it.
14. Click OK to store the whole AVG Firewall configuration and test the connection.

Now I had AVG 8.5 and I couldn't get very far with these instructions, so I updated to AVG 9 and STILL haven't found any joy.. Problems I'm having is are as follows:

1. I attempt to do steps 1-5 and get the error that "The current application path already exists as a Rule. See the following rule: Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" .. I assume this is fine, it just means that those steps are taken care of under that rule that already existed.. However!
2. When I try to continue with step 6, I am completely confused because I don't see an application called "Various system services" anywhere in the left tree. I see "System services" but when I click on it, I don't see any "Application detail rules" and it doesn't give me any options to add anything!

That's where I'm stuck. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,
Butch

I'm pretty sure that your problem is occurring because you haven't opened all of the necessary ports: -

TCP - 2869
UDP - 1900
UDP - 10280-10284
TCP - 10243

Try editing the existing rule to add in those ports and then see if it works.

You'll have to forgive me, but how exactly do you open these ports in AVG? I've been trying to find this info out. I assume that the instructions I posted explained how to do it on an older version of AVG, because of how the user interface doesn't appear to match the description in the steps..

That I don't know, as I don't use a third party software firewall.

Presumably as AVG said this: -

Quote:
"The current application path already exists as a Rule. See the following rule: Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service"

....then somewhere there will be a list of rules with that rule on it, which you can edit to add in extra ports.

I don't see this rule anywhere.. Thanks for your replies though. Anyone else?

Let me clarify that last message - I do see the application "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" which uses/points to that c:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe file, and it is set to "allow all".. Like it should be..

However, I don't see where I'm supposed to open any ports for that rule, or any other.

Can someone help please? I've gotta think that someone has this set up properly..
