I just recently purchased a 360 and I've been trying to get it to play backups, but it seems as if I'm failing miserably. I've made several useless DVD+R DLs already and not one of them loads (the 360 just tries to read it, but can't).

At first, the method I used for burning was simply using DVD Decrypter with the layerbreak set in. This was the method I used for another 360 and it worked perfectly (same medium too). Nonetheless, when it didn't worked, I looked up a tutorial here, and I used ImgBurn too. Still didn't work.

I'm at a loss and I'm trying to save myself from turning anymore DVD-R DLs into coasters. Could someone please offer advice? Thank you.

Yes, the 360 is using modded firmware. It was able to read an Xbox 1 backup I put in fine. However, I have been doing some searching, and I read that many people have this issue due to the firmware being older. Is there a way for me to check which version I have?

Oh, and the message I get when I'm trying to play backups is 'Open Tray'. The 360 doesn't appear to be reading them at all.

Sorry for taking so long to get back.

Anyway, so I'll have to remove the casing in order to see the firmware version and to clean the lens? Oh man, I would hope it would be a bit easier. This is rather frustrating since the legit games seems to work perfectly fine.

Okay, I'll try to follow the suggestions. Thank you for your help!

Randy, first, make sure you have the latest firmware.

If your firmware is up to date enough to play recent backups, then the 'Open Tray' error often is the result of the DVD laser on your 360.

Do a search for 'pot calibration'. You need to open your DVD drive and use a multimeter to detect the resistance on the laser. The higher the resistance, the less power the laser gets. The laser oftentimes needs more power to read backup games.

If you find the points you need to measure with the multimeter, you are looking to get anywhere from about 2.8 to 4.5 ohms. Fewer ohms is more powerful.

Lessen the resistance a little at a time, say .25 to .5 ohms, by turning the screw with a tiny screwdriver. After each adjustment, attempt to load the game again.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check
