I have 2 xboxs and for some reason on both it makes me log into xbox live before I can watch xvid or avi files off my external hard drive, so if im playing on live in one room and my wife wants to watch a movie of the external hard drive in the other room is it possible for us to both be logged into the same xbox live account at once???

Just make your wife an account. Silver is free and you can both be online at once

That happens because the optional media update that you have to download to watch those files is protected by DRM, just like downloaded XBLA games. It happened to me when I got a new console and connected my old hard drive to it. To fix it, I deleted the optional media update off the hard drive and made a new Silver Live account and downloaded it again (for some reason it wouldn't work if I downloaded it again using my regular gamertag). Then any gamertag could watch files on that console without being logged into Live, and I deleted the temporary Silver gamertag.

It will also happen if you downloaded the optional media update on one console, then you clipped the hard drive to the other console. The hard drive that you downloaded the update with has to be connected to the console you used to download it, or you can just delete it and download it again using the method I mentioned above.
