Do I need to update the expense dashboard to use the new Xbox 360 image loading devices? Like the xkey.

I try to update my dashboard to install the latest Iextreme firmware. But I received an error message that said something to the effective security and other updates will need to be installed in order for this update to take place.
When I accepted the update to the Xbox try to connect to the Internet but could not. So, the update failed.
So I am hoping that there is some way that I will be able to use a device like the xkey without updating my dashboard. Will I need to update my dashboard?

I would assume that even though it's an image (ISO) loader, that it will act just like the retail disc, because it's the same game. In other words, regardless of the format that the game comes on, a wave 13 game is a wave 13 game is a wave 13 game is a wave 13 game.
