Drive isnt working, POT?

Hey, I have obtained 2 xbox's from a janitor at work. He apparently tried the "rrod fix" by replacing the x clamps, with no luck. He also mentioned the disc drives didnt work so he "attempted" to adjust the pot. When I tore open the xbox (previous knowledge with fixing the RROD) - I noticed he had pennies literally TAPED to the MOBO. I figured the board was toasted. I gave it a shot anyways and managed to get it to work. The drive doesnt work at all. I have a lot of knowledge with computers and electronics. However, I'm not too familiar with adjust this "pot". Now, to my understanding theres 2 adjustments, The left is for the DVD and the right is for CD. (BENQ drive). I am want to test the CD functionality of the drive but I'm not totally sure where to hook up the multimeter as their is only 1 spot.
I am not a pro with the multimeter. I have a 10 dollar one from walmart, but a lot of websites say it needs the 20k feature. What if it doesnt have the 20k feature? Will I need a new one?

Any advice would help. I also have another 360 with the dirty disc, open tray error and was possibly considering tweaking the pot. I just dont think my multimeter has the 20k feature.

I have the 10 dollar one from walmart. I don't know if I am allowed to provide a link to it. Its not the digital one.

Thanks!

I've done pot tweaking before without a multimeter, you just need to make very small turns on the point for the pot. Then test. If that doesn't work, turn it a little more, until you basically have it working.

If that doesn't work, you may need to get a new drive!

throw them away. Penny trick warps the motherboard. If he did a POT cal, that means the laser is shot.
