E71 - Is the xbox toast?

Hi All,
I have an xbox 360 given to me recently which initially worked, but randomly got e71 errors.. Like an idiot i tried xbox live, attempted an update which then rebooted and now gives me an e71 error..
I've tried rebooting holding the sync button but that doesnt help
I've tried burning an update disk from xbox.com , and usb, and booting and that also doesnt work , still e71 error
I've tried disassembling and removing the xbox dvd drive (it might have previously badly flashed I thought) but again same error..
Any other ideas?

most likely needs to be reflowed, there is something that is not passing integrity tests

DVD drive? again pointing to a bad flash by a previous owner?

1010 is not a hard drive problem it is memory error, which means one or more of your RAM chips is not being read during the boot cycle, like i said your only hope is to do a reflow, and i would strongly recommend wooleys reflow method, search in here and you will find it, or search youtube, it is not necessary that you replace the xclamps, but you may if you like.

thanks for the specific link to a "good" valid reflow technique..
Oh just of interest, I rebooted today with my 120gb HD attached and it did something weird ,it simply stopped on the screen with the xbox logo, and strangely enough when I turned on a controller it registered it as normal (ie a green light appeared/disappeared accordingly) ....
However upon rebooting again, it did the same e71, so your thoughts its a memory fault are pretty spot on id say.
again many thanks, I'll let everyone know how the reflow goes, when/if I try it. :-)

Just realised I think the memory chips are near one of the heatsinks so probably worth just doing the lot....

yeah you will be better off doing it all just as wooley does in the video, what i meant was just replace your xclamps when you are done, if you wish to replace them with screws and washers thats up to you, but you do not have to do that.
