I'm not sure what's causing it, but the whole xbox will randomly freeze on the dashboard or the game, doesn't matter if its a backup or original. Sometimes after freezing it'll give me E71. I read it could be a dashboard failure so should I do the initial setup? Or will that mess up the firmware of the DVD drive? It shouldn't be overheated as I let it cool down for about 8 - 10 hours before trying again and it was only on for about 3 before, with an extra fan built in as well.
I'm not sure what firmware the drive is flashed with since I bought it already flashed, and I can't hook it up to my computer since I don't have the right hookups.
Edit: After more testing it seems to freeze most often when saving. If I take the harddrive out of my xbox, XBOX LIVE says I need to do an update which I decline. I have a memory card and a USB stick and the games seem to freeze when saving... But it still will freeze elsewhere, even at the dashboard.

E71 is usually a bad dash update... this means something didn't write correctly when trying to update the nand. I believe you can try to hold down the sync button on the console, then power it up, wait until it completely boots to the dash, then try updating again. By holding the sync, it erases any corrupt files that might be stored due to the bad update.

Edit: Tried it, still freezes. I'm going to try reformatting my harddrive even though it seems to freeze without it, perhaps something magical will happen..
Edit2: Now it doesn't even get past the boot screen..
Edit3: After finally making it to the dashboard, I found out I misunderstood what initial setup was. I thought it reinstalled the dashboard all the way back to what it started with when it was bought. I formatted the harddrive, I made it to the dashboard (have tried syncing while starting numerous times), I've cleared the cache, it still freezes. What should I do now..?
Edit4: RROD............ great.
