I'm on windows 7 and here is what I do. Plug in drive with sata cable. power the drive. Now right click on "my computer" and select manage. Now click device manager in the left column. Now in the right column right click on "computer" and select scan for hardware changes. After it's done you should be able to open xbox backup creator or whatever else your trying to use and the drive will show up.
