Possible to use old Xbox HD on new slim 4gb?

#1 14 Dec 2010 @ 15:59
Would it be as easy as taking out the HD from an old Xbox and just putting the internal HD in the slim since the HD is already partitioned? Just wondering since I think 250GB is to much for me and I'll probably be fine with 20 or 60GB.

Now I don't have a Slim 360 but if I recall correctly, the Slim uses a different HDD caddy. So, if you want to use an HDD from an old 360, then you'll need to open the casing and take the HDD off. Then put the HDD inside the Slim 360's HDD case.

Thanks for the response! So old xbox 360 are completely compatible with 360 slims whether it be a 20gb, 60gb, or 120gb hard drive?

What my main concern is that the old 360 hard drives are partitioned differently than the new slim's hard drives and won't be compatible.

They are all the same HDD except different sizes so yes they will work. I highly doubt that Slim 360 HDD's are partitioned differently so you'll be good.

There's the catch. The 4g Slim doesn't have a hdd caddy.

The Slim hdd's are along the same line as the PS3 hdd's. You just open a cover and pull out the hdd tray. The 250 (obviously) has a hdd installed in a tray. But there's nothing in the 4g.

I know Deal Extreme has the hdd trays for the slim.

I've also seen videos of people just carefully placing a hdd in to the Slim without using a tray.

Also, I concur with the others. You can use your old 360 hdd's with the new Slim models.

That's around $80! A little too much but I guess it's fine if you're desperate.
