I just got a XBOX 360 Elite 120GB version in black with a Lite-On DVD Drive (took faceplate off and saw 2 yellow wires). I want to hack this thing to play backups so I was hoping I can get some help with this. I have done a search but I can't tell which methods are outdated and I am confused because it seems there are multiple ways of doing this. I got this XBOX 360 as a surprise birthday gift so I haven't done any research on this hacking and I have no idea where to start.

1) I see that there are some versions of the Lite-On drive. How do I tell which one it is?

2) I see there are some tutorials on how to switch the Lite-On drive for a hackable Samsung one. If the Lite-on one is hackable, then why would you need to do the swap?

3) I don't want to solder anything. What do I need to buy to get this process moving?

4) How difficult is this? I have 'fixed' PSPs and my PS2.

5) Where is a thorough walkthrough from beginning to end a 5 year old can do?

6) My manufacture date is 7-19-2009 and I see that some of these drives can't be hacked. How can I tell if mine can be hacked? As mentioned above, I just got it and if I can't mod it, then I don't want to mod it and ruin the warranty.

7) Do I absolutely need a PC with XP? I have one but for some reason whenever I plug anything into it, the computer doesn't recognize new cards. Since it is really tough to find a PC with XP nowadays.

Anything else?

1. Open it up.
2. You don't.
3. Probably a VIA SATA VT6421 PCI card.
4. Not very. Just make sure to read steps carefully.
5. Go here.
6. I'm pretty sure a drive from that date is moddable, but you might've gotten unlucky. No way to know if it's moddable or not if you don't open it. It will be moddable eventually anyways if it's not now.
7. A PC with XP helps, but you could go the bootable by USB route.

No soldering is required unless you have a 7 series liteon. Then you will need to buy a probe to avoid soldering.

Aslong as it's not 64 bit you can use the jungle flasher tut.

Camping is not a legitimate strategy.

I think I made a mistake identifying the manufacturing date. I see that the manufacturing date starting in August means that the DVD drive might be unhackable. The 7/19/09 manufacture date I mentioned was the manufacture date of my XBOX, not the Lite-On drive itself.

Am I supposed to be looking at XBOX manufacture date or Lite-On drive date?

Since my manufacture date for the XBOX360 is in July, this probably means that I am safe, correct?
