For those wanting to buy a 1TB internal hdd for their ps3, check the dimensions of the drive before you buy!
Normal 2.5" Sata drives are 9.5mm in height. 1TB hdds require an extra platter which increases their height to 12mm. This makes them too thick to fit in your ps3!
750GB hdds are currently the largest internal drives you can buy. If you need more space then you will want to get an external drive or enclosure.

Yes, precisely. One thought I had though is using a custom SATA ribbon cable extension coming out of the case to plug into a drive housed in an external enclosure. Something someone with time and resources might try... I would but next semester isn't going to be cheap.
Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean youre expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

Check youtube as 1TB PS3 are quite common. It does require trimming the console for proper fit.
However, with everything progressing so quickly, ot wont be long before an external hdd will do everything an internal will. Quite happy with my 2TB external. If your going to spend the extra money on the adapter cable, dont evwn bother with a 1 TB, get a 2 TB or greater.

There has been some talk of using a hardware port multiplier with the esata adapter kit to get 10TB+ volumes as well...but it seems like no one wants to put that much money down on something that might not work.

That is odd...I know you can't trust anyone on the internet, but a few people have told me that 2TB drives work if you format them right.
