Wow, you're a very devoted father. :)

I think the only thing you should worry about is whether you have an internet connection or not. If you've got a wireless connection, then you should be able to configure things fairly easily. If you have a wired router, then you'll need to buy an ethernet cable (or use one you already have) to connect your PS3 to the internet to update it.

That's about the only thing I can think of right now.

I think you should worry about your kids playing MW2. i was looking forward to the game and preordered it but then saw this:

not telling you what to do, just thought you should know. to me this is VERY disturbing.

Your friend is honest and thinks she plays AC2 on a PS3. In reality she is playing AC1 on a PS2.

sounds like you got everything u need to give youre kids a good christmas!!!! however just make sure they do there school work before they play... wish my parents did that to me when i was in school lol :)
#8 09 Nov 2009 @ 23:31
They are gona flip. BTW...the PS3 can be used with some PC monitors for HD play. You don't need a keyboard or mouse, but you can use normal PC USB devices for this, so if you want to get them later, you can get a cheap combo set for $20. If you have an old bluetooth headset that you are not using, you might want to throw that in as a stocking stuffer...these can be used for in-game chat with team members. (!!!not recomended for younger children!!!)

If my parents bought me these things all in one Christmas, I'd probably die from excitement. The only thing I suggest is making sure you'll be able to connect it to the internet for online play. Just like a few other people have already suggested. Good luck!

thanks for all the input. glad i dont have to get anything extra.
yes the boys are going to be happy about it, they dont have a clue we are even thinking about this for them. also they dont get the games on a school night. only fri-sat-sun. it is that way now with their PS2's and DS's

if i want to hook it up to my 50in plasma all i need is a HDMI cable and ican play games and movies up here, and just leave the other cables plugged into their tv.

whats that all about?
We get 1 or 2 post a week asking if the PS3 can be modded to allow them to steal games off of the net. This guy was saying that some one had modded his friends PS3 (did not happen). Someone was having fun with him.

Your N router will be fine as long as it produces G as well. The PS3 communicates on G only. If your router is B,G and N , Disable the B if you do not have any B devices. Some games work better online when Port Forwarded such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare. This is a good link on how to set up your PS3 internet connection settings and your Router. http://www.pregamelobby.com/forum/sony-r...t-your-ps3.html

HDMI cable is all you need for your HDTV. Get a cheap one at wal-mart. Expensive cables are a scam.

Swapping the PS3 from a HDTV to Standard TV. When you take the PS3 from the HDTV, you will have it set to output over HDMI. When you connect to the SDTV, (No HDMI) you will not be able to see anything. You can either change the PS3 settings from HDMI while connected to the HDTV (Before taking it to the kids tv) or after connecting to the kids tv (with no video), hold the power button down for 10 seconds. The second option will wipe out any video settings that you might have saved on the PS3 and it will revert to 480 (composit/componet?) which ever cables come with the PS3. I don’t know what this does to any audio settings that you have saved.

If you are not real familiar with PC’s and network communication setup, I would set up the network communication before Christmas. Don’t want the kids asking “how much longer, how much longer.

You’re a good dad.

id just like to emphasize what someone here said about online chat: Beware there are a lot of really nasty people online these days, especially any mature shooting/action multiplayer such as MW2 or Warhawk so it would probably be better to turn of voice chat in such games.
#17 10 Nov 2009 @ 18:39
JUST 'CUZ YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE HEAT!!!!!!!!

Nah, I kid. But yeah, the chat in a lot of games, even rather mundane ones, has a tendency to get... more spirited, let's say.

Speaking of which, I was playing the original MW and there was this ridiculously annoying guy who just kept BREATHING and BREATHING into his mic. I'd be able to mute him during actual gameplay, but he'd reset to On once we got back to the lobby. Anyone know how to make these mutings permanent, if possible?

Anyway. Sorry to derail this train. I think everybody here's got you covered. You should be good to go.

also id maybe reconsider modern warfare 2. pending on how old your kids are i got the game today and it is much much more violent than the others! they shouldnt have had that scene, cuz its a very hot topic and alot of kids play cod, however it is kind of fun lol
#19 10 Nov 2009 @ 20:43
Regarding the online chat, it can get pretty bad. Depending on age, sometimes it's best to have kids only connect to friends they know. Sony makes it pretty clear that online interactions are not rated. Regarding MW2, there are other fun shooters that are not violent and disturbing. Good call on Uncharted! If your kids are young, I would recommend Little Big Planet. I feel much better seeing my kids break up the shooting action by designing their own levels and show their creativity.

Congrats on the purchase! FOTY! (Father of the Year)

Just be there for the start of CODMW2. There is an option at the start of the game for turnning off offensive scenes.
#21 12 Nov 2009 @ 13:38
great info guys and thank you all. i will look deeply into the router stuff for on line play.. but i think that might be for me only. at least for MW2 i wont let them know thats a option. as for my router I'm pretty sure it is back wards compatible so I'm good there.

so when i hook it up to my plasma once I'm done i need to set it back for a/v settings. i will need to get the manual out for it and read up on it before i let them have it. i might have to actually set it up while they are in school and get familiar with it what it can and cant do. play a little bit of MW2 just to see how it is, first hand...lol
#22 12 Nov 2009 @ 14:15
I have my Audio and Video setting set Manualy. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong but i think you can set the Video to Auto Detect the best Video settings. It may take care of you if set to Auto Detect or whatever it is called.

Internet setup is very easy on the PS3 when you do an Easy – Auto set up. This works fine %99 of the time for %99 of the people. The walkthrough that is listed will give you a %100 deterministic connection.

Like we said, CODMW online trash talking fools can be mutted by selecting their name. You have to do this at each game thow.
