ps3 random blank screen, maybe rsx chip?

#1 09 Jan 2010 @ 19:47
I have a 20 gig that is blanking out at random every 10-60 minutes for about 5-10 seconds each time. I egged on an online repair guy into telling me he thought it was my rsx chip. "You have cold solder joints underneath the RSX chip and needs to be replaced" I can solder, i was wondering if anyone had done this before or has replaced the rsx chip. I don't want to ruin my mostly functioning ps3 because i screwed it up, but i believe with some direction i can probably fix it myself.

No, you do not need to replace your RSX chip...that guy is a conman.

The RSX chip sometimes needs to be "reflowed" by using a heatgun, but no one is going to do this by hand with a soldering iron...it just can't be done.
