I was in the process of selling my ps3 40 gig model since I got the silm.
I left it in my car all day while I was at work.
It was quite cold outside, to the point where when I picked up the system from my car, it was all fogged up (condensation) and its like -1 C outside.
It turns on fine but now it doesnt read discs properly.
Either gives me the reading error or it loads the disc then gives a disc error mid-way on loading.
Now I know I was probably a retard for leaving it in my car (for about 12hrs).
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues with the ps3 in regarding to leaving it in their car for a long period of time.
Hoping cleaning of the lens would solve the issue but Im thinking the internal parts might have experienced some condensation too.
Guess I should be thankful that it turns on compared to my xbox360 I accidently dropped on concrete...

Leaving it in the cold isnt the big deal, its likely that you didnt wait for it to warm back upto room temperature fully that did it in. You hit cold electronics with heat all of a sudden and you're asking for trouble.

My PS3 was, last winter, left in a room that got as cold as -3 degrees Fahrenheit (about... -20 degrees Celsius), and it worked fine. (Then again, I didn't play it much, if at all.)
This year, though, I'm most likely going to move it somewhere warmer. I don't think the super cold temps will help it any. (Might help with electricity conduction, though...)
EDIT:
Stupid me and my wrong calculations. Fixed.

But what do I know? I ain't no canuck. :P
Anyway.
MZSM, have you set it in a good, warm place for a while? Try restarting it after it's had ample time to warm up.

i had -50 f where im from luckily i got stationed in south carolina nice and warm! but yea it is usual a rule of thumb for all electronics. if you are going to leave it in extrememly cold temperatures all you have to do is let it warm up for a good hour or so and you should be fine. i know its hard to believe but we can wait an hour to play medal gear solid lol.

It gets cold there to dont you know.
BTW...the problem is likely due to condensation in the lense. Leave the system in a warm, dry area for a couple of days, and the problem just might fix itself.

if your planning on taking it apart to replace the drive then you might aswell take it all apart get a hair dryer or heat gun on a low setting and dry out all the components individually.
