I haven't touched the Wii since it's been collecting dust, but I just helped my friend get his Wii softmodded via The Twilight Hack.

I know that my Wii is firmware 3.4U and my friend's is 3.3U. From what I remember (forgot what firmware it was) there was one that came out that allowed you us use Wii Channels off of the SD memory stick. People had problems after downloading it so I haven't updated my Wii since then.

I didn't even let my other friend who brought over Punchout to play since it had the newest update on the disc.

What should I do and is it alright to update it?

It's alright to update. I'd make sure I have a cIOS first.

4.0 is the System Menu that allows you to use VC and Wiiware off of the SD card.

And Punch Out has the 3.4 update.

Does it really? That's strange 'cause I already have 3.4. Why would I need to update it again?

Anyway, like, I already installed a CIOS wen I first softmodded the Wii, but you're telling me that I have to reinstall it? Does following steps from:

have anything to do with it? Mind you I never went up to the Downgrading/Upgrading Firmware guide. And does IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad have anything to do with it either? Sorry about the loads of questions. I'm no pro at all with Wii hacking just yet. I just wanted to softmod the Wii to play backups.

Other than that, I can update the Wii to 4.0 with no problem right?

If you already installed cIOS then you don't have to install it again. You don't even absolutely have to do it before upgrading to 4.0. People (including me) just say to do it because one: it can be considered easier than doing it on 4.0, and two: because not to long ago there wasn't a way to install it on 4.0 so if you didn't have it from before then you had a problem.

The purpose of that guide was to install cIOS on a 3.3 (with the October 23rd update) or a 3.4 system. IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad is what you would use from that guide to install IOS16 since IOS16 wasn't blocked and from IOS16 you would install cIOS but it sounds like you have already done this. By the way IOS16 was Nintendo's own legitimate IOS that got leaked.

Honestly you can update even if you don't have cIOS.
