where do I start the transformation from software user to developer/contributor

I have been using many of these homebrew apps for a short time. I program PLC and Robotics as a trade. It is in my nature to look at something, and wonder to my self what makes this work, how can I make it better at lease to me, and share. What language should I know? What tools are out there to help a guy get started?
