how do i remove black vertical lines in my video?

I use a camcorder to a DVR then rip the DVD+R into Nero to edit my video. I get these vertical black lines to the left and to the right of my image. It is almost like I looking at a wide screen video while laying sideways. Anybody have any ideas how to get rid of it? Here is a screen shot to show you what I mean.

What was it?
I looked at it and thought it was because either the cam was outputting 16:9 widescreen but tagging it as 4:3 or that the recorder was tagging it as 4:3
I would be interested to know how you resolved it.
