Essentials is an OEM bundled with a new comp or sold as part of a dvd writer,the link below shows three versions all 3 are stripped down versions of full retail nero.Are you sure his version is 7 & not version 9.

Regardless post what it is you want to do as there are free programs that can do what you require without forking out money or just install your hubby's version but do it offline & when installing deselect checkbox for updater or go somewhere to get nero 10 for free *winks*

dvdshrink -rip dvd's newer dvd's require dvdfab to rip then edit with dvdshrink,has similar editing to nero recode

dvdfab -free rip dvd/blue ray always
vidcoder - convert dvb to mp4,mkv etc,also has persets to encode video to mobile devices & is a simpler version of handbrake

handbrake-same as vidcoder but more hands on however contains presets
