Use VOB2MPG to convert a ripped DVD movie Title to a single, large, mpeg2 file (assuming the player will accept them).
The DVD player manual will tell you if the HDD has to be formatted Fat32 or NTFS.
A Fat32 HDD (or flash drive) won't accept a file larger than 4GB, so depending on that restriction, you may have to use a program that can get the file down to the limit.

Any external HDD or flash drive that I have seen is formatted Fat32 - but if the player will accept NTFS, they can be converted easily.
The drive properties will show the type of file system.
