Hey! I've got Lord of the Rings trilogy special extended edition. It only has English subtitles. I want to add Spanish subs so my girlfriend can enjoy them too. Also, what is equally important to me, is to have no video compression, and to keep the DTS sound track. I plan on burning it back to DVD9. I've gone through 2 different tutorials on how to do it. I've copied the DVD to my hard drive, demuxed it into an m2v and .dts sound files. I downloaded a srt file with the subtitles. Created a sup file. Recombined everything... The subtitles appear, but they are not synchronized. My problem is that the software I am using doesn't allow me to preview my subtitles until I recombine everything on my hard drive (takes almost an hour!). The subs I have are apparently 25 fps. I tried converting the subs it to 29.97 fps. Still not synchronized. Is there some software out there that will let me change the subtitle rate and offset and let me preview it immediately? I see that ConvertXtoDVD seems to be popular. Will this software suit my needs? I'm not a big fan of using a billion different programs. Any tips in any areas would be appreciated
You don't mention what guides and software you have tried...Did you use SubtitleCreator? It seems it might do what you need in conjunction with other applications: http://subtitlecreator.sourceforge.net/SubtitleCreatorHomepage.html ConvertxtoDVD would not work for your project.
Yes I tried SubtitleCreator. It seems to create the sub file fine. The problem is I can't preview the subtitles and the movie to see i they are synchronized. I tried changing the settings from PAL to NTSC, from 25 to 29.97 fps. Each time I try something it takes an hour to see if it worked. I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere.
It might be worth making a quick and dirty AVI file using AutoGK or similar. Then you can work on synching the SRT and playing it back instantly with ffdshow or vobsub. When it's right make the DVD.
Ok, I will give that a try tonight. I'm assuming that the AVI file I create will need to be the same frame rate as the DVD in order for this to be useful. The DVD is NTSC, so I will create the AVI @ 29.970 fps unless someone here correct's me.
It may be, or if AUtoGK determines the movie is telecined film, (which it almost certainly is) the frame rate will be reduced to the proper 23.976 . (This will not affect the synch, playback time will be the same)
So if I try to create a 29.97 FPS avi, and the source is actually 23.976 as you say, AutoGK will automagically create the avi @ 23.976? Or will it just tell me that it is 23.976 and I will have to change the setting? Thanks for the assistance!
I think it will do it automatically. In any event for the syncing of the subs, it's doesn't really matter.
Ok, I have made progress, but now I have a new problem... First off, here's the guide I'm using: http://subtitlecreator.sourceforge.net/AddingSubtitles2aDVD.htm (I use rejig for authoring @ the end as I heard ifoedit sometimes has NTSC issues) I briefly tried creating an AVI from the DVD, but it failed, so I started looking back at the guide. I saw that for SubtitleCreator, there is a synchronization feature that allows you to load a known working subtitle file and pick synchronization points between the good file and your file. Then it converts your file. After I demuxed the dvd, there was an English sub file I could use for this process. Everything is synchronized now! Woo! But... As I'm watching the DVD, the subtitles stop displaying. If I turn the subtitles off then on again, sometimes they come back. I checked my SRT file and I have entries for those times. The only thing I am not sure of in SubtitleCreator is that beside some of the subtitles, there is either a light blue or darker blue box. but there is no explanation as to why that box is there. Maybe that has something to do with it? Any thoughts? And my second, less important, problem is that my subtitles are green with a blue outline. Readable, but kind of distracting as they are quite ugly looking. How do I change those colours?
