i have a number of files that play properly, but when i use convertxtodvd the subs are just way cut off. This is not overscan, nor a tv/display problem, we are talking full words missing. i do this all the time with other files and havnt had any issues, i tried the latest version 3 and the beta for v4. i tried making the crop pads below minimal and i could see the words are just out past the black bars. I am working with Matroska files. Ive seen a few users out there having the same or similar issues with matroska files but havnt yet seen a good solution, sorry if this has been solved, i did a handful of searches and didnt see anything. Also i wasnt totally sure if this should be in the subs section or the software section for convertx, but i figured id try here first. Anyone have any insight? Thanks
I can't offer anything for ConvertX - but DVDSubEdit can set the position of subtitles. Run DVDSubEdit > File > Open Full Domain and select VTS_01_1.VOB from the folder. Select the subtitle stream (top right of pane). Pick a subtitle and position it as required. Click 'Edit' > Apply last modifications to all (this will set the same position for all subtitles in the selected stream). Click 'File' > Save all modifications. that may help. im not sure because the sub is extending off of both sides, ill grab a screen when im home so you can see what i mean. in the meantime though that sounds like a handy app. ill mess with it a bit later tonight once im @ home.
heres the shot. upper left is powerdvd, upper right is media player, lower center is dvdsubedit. i can move the subs around but i cant squeeze them of shift them so they are in view. Convertxtodvd has a how many chars in a sub per line option, but it doesnt seem to work at all. i tried a bunch of settings that should change the text drastically but all that takes effect is the font, not the spacing and line break settings.
There is a program called MKV Demux All http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkv-demux-all/ It will extract subtitle streams. If your sub stream is .ssa it might be possible to open it in Subtitle Workshop and save it as a (SubRip) .srt file and use that in ConvertX.
I was afraid that might be my solution.. since im stuck with a number of these files its going to be tedious to extract them all. while waiting on responses i found another person who fixed it by extracting them all using either your method or a similar one, then editing them and addling line breaks manually, talk about tedious, ouch anyone know of anything i can run automatically on a number of these files and have it help/solve the issue? -o and btw thanks for the responses, if i cant find anything to mass to all at once i am definitely going to mess around with them just to see if its possible and how it works
just an update. after poking around teh convertx forums and such it looks like everyone has this issue with mkv files. im not very familiar with subtitles but i know there are multiple types and some of the types used in many mkvs use their own sub info and not the programs. So as stated above, the only real fix is to extract them and use a separate file. The working and best solution i found involved extracting the sub and then converting it to ASCII if it isnt already, then adding line breaks. Since i have a large number of files this is not an ideal solution for me so im still poking around. My next step is to try and convert all of the files from mkv to a more standard format and then converting again to dvd.
