Hi, I've been trying to get some Vietnamese titles converted into idx/sub format for my parents to watch. The subtitle file (SRT) appears to be in Unicode, and I'm trying to convert it to an image-based format so it can play on a Patriot Box Office. I have tried txt2vobsub, but it will not load a Unicode file, only an ANSI file. But if I save the SRT as an ANSI file, the symbols become corrupted. Patriot Box does not have the proper stuff to display these characters (lots of them are missing). I have also tried SubtitleCreator, but for some reason, IDX/SUB files generated by this software do not display on the Patriot Box. Now my option is to look for alternatives. These files play fine in VLC/anything_on_my_PC. It would be great if there was some way I could just copy or extract the displayed subtitles. But I'm not sure how. Any ideas here? Thanks. I can post my sample subtitle file for you to take a look, but I'm not sure if this is against the rules. This is probably a fan-translated from original English subtitles.
You can load the entire subtitles for example at Mediafire or similar, someone might have a look at them and be able to help you.
Thanks. I uploaded the subtitle file here: http://rapidshare.com/files/360106131/x.zip In the mean time, I found one method I could use to get the subtitles the way I wanted was to convert the video file to DVD w/subtitles using ConvertXToDVD, and then use VSRip to extract the subtitles. They don't look super nice, but it works.
That is a lot of work, just to extract the subs...You said that you've Code: >tried also SubtitleCreator, but for some reason, IDX/SUB files generated by this software do not display on the Patriot Box< I couldn't open that srt file in SubtitleCreator, wrong file type error. Can you play the idx/sub files created by SubtiteCreator on your PC? If you can, what you can try is to open those idx/sub in a different program and save them again, maybe your player would recognize them. You can try Subresync or VobSubStrip.
Thanks for the tips. In SubtitleCreator, to open it you have to first set the Character Encoding (under Formatting menu) 1258 Vietnam for it to display properly. The idx/sub plays fine on VLC when I load the video file and subtitle file.
Did you try VobSubStrip to open the idx/sub from SubtitleCreator and see if they'd work in your player? Open the idx from Subtitle Creator and from ConvertxtoDVD and see if you find any differences. Does your player support any other subtitles besides idx/sub? Which player do you have(a link?) . Try this(involves one more software, but much quicker than using COnvertxtoDVD and then rip the subs...): Convert the srt to sub/idx with Subtitle Creator. Use VobSubStrip to save the Sub/idx to a new Sub/idx. Try that in your player. If it doesn't work, try muxing the new idx/sub subtitles using AviAddxSubs , see if the player accepts them. http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/VobSubStrip-Download-21128.html http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php
Hi cyprusrom, thanks for the help. I mentioned before I'm trying to play this on the Patriot Box. I asked for a solution on their support forum, also - http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3064 Someone posted a solution that I was able to get working, able to display the files on the media player properly now. I'll keep your solution in mind (open with VobSubStrip and resave) in the future if something goes wrong.
