i had a movie that was split into two avi files, and i also had 2 srt files for each part (most of movie is in english with about 20% in french, subs are strictly for french sections). using convertxtodvd4 i successfully merged the two avi files and added the corresponding subs. then converted to VOB. im attempting to burn via Nero Vision but it wont burn the subs. when i watch the vob files in VLC player the subs wont show until i do into the Video drop down tab then turn them on under the Subtitle sub-menu. so that means they are not hard encoded correct? how do i either hard encode them, or get Nero Vision to turn them on for the burning process?
Your process is a little confusing...Why did you convert to DVD? Once converted to DVD, with subtitles, why do you want to convert back to an AVI with hardcoded subs? What is you final goal? If you want to have a DVD disc with subtitles, you already have that. The files made by convertx2DVD, burn them to disc using Imgburn. You will be able to turn the subtitles on using the DVD remote.

Okay, so the only reason you used ConvertxtoDVD is because you wanted to join the subs and the 2 video parts... Doesn't Convertx2DVD have an option to create a menu? Well, that's not the best way to go about it...you encode that video 3 times, losing quality every time. Here is how you should merge the 2 video sections and the subtitles, in a couple of minutes, with no conversion/quality loss: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/661410 Then you can use http://www.any-video-converter.com/download-avc-free.php to hardcode the subtitles: I am not sure what exactly are you looking for in Nero Vision and that custom menu...DVD Flick and Convertx2DVD can create a menu. There are some default one, plus tons of download-able ones. However, if you want to go the Nero Vision way, follow the above. When you hardcode the subs, I would use a rather high video bitrate in AnyVideoConverter, to output a quality AVI/mp4. edit: Actually, now that I am thinking about it, when you hardcode the subs, convert to DVD(chose that option from the drop down menu at the right top corner). This way Any Video Converter will output a DVD compliant mpeg. Nero Vision has the option not to re-encode the DVD compliant mpeg video(you need to enable Nero Smart Encoding), so you skip one encoding and preserve the video quality.
i use nero for the menu so i can animate them with the certain movies wallpapers also, i normally use convertx because the original file is an mkv and nero doesnt recognize it.
the instructions by Attar dont really make sense with the programs he says to download, possibly a newer version out now? in Avidemux, i load the first video, append the second, then what? i open Subtitle Workshop, and he says under the Tools menu click Join Subtitles, but there is nothing there like that, and therefor none of the following steps make sense either. i dragged and dropped the srt files, but without having a movie to load from Avidemux it was pointless. any help? thanks
In Avidemux, after you append the second part, go to File->Save->Save video. Give the joined video a name, including the extension.
Here's something else that i found and might make your life easier, don't need Avidemux or SubtitleWorkshop: Like in the picture below, load the first video file, select the subtitle and set to encode to DVD(NTSC/PAL, depending where you are situated. Load the second part of the video, select subs. Then click on the first video, press "Ctrl" key and click on the second video and then right-click the selection. Choose merge output. Should save one mpeg with hardcoded subs.
I have to admit that the Any Video Converter is the easiest way of doing things. Howeverrrrr.... THEN, the hardcoded subs are IN the way of the movie! If you want the hardcoded subs to appear completely out of the way, like in this video, you should use VirtualDub, Srt-To-SSA and the VirtualDub subtitler plugin. This is called hardcoded subtitles in a letterbox, I think. This is the technical term for this. It's not hard, but requires a little work. 4 mins, plus the convertion time. PS And if you can tell me who this girl is, i'd be very much obliged!
Well, if you want to go the VDub way, then I prefer Avidemux(more input/output options). I just wanted to give "the easiest" option. VDub method/Avidemux are not complicated, however some users get a bit nervous when opening an application that has tons of options. I started with Vdub, so im used to that one. Avidemux seems a bit cluttered and unorganized to me. However, whats excellent in Avidemux is the OCD tool for converting idx/sub files to .srt subtitles, i discovered that last week after yet another failed attempt by Subrip. Vdub can be a bit choosy and picky sometimes when it comes to appending, avidemux just doesnt' care as much about tiny differences.
