The difference a VOB SUB and SRT and how to convert .

Not long ago I asked for help adding subs permanently to AVI files to burn onto a disc and watch on a DVD player . I'm giving it a try again with the programs virtual dub and vobsub and staring to get the hang of it .
The problem is when in virtual dub and in the add filter , when I click on textsub 2.23gabest I'm told VOBSUB 2.23 not found .
The file I have is a subtitle or SRT file and is there a difference ? I f so , any idea how to change it . I know I can watch the movie on my PC with media player classic so it can't be a bad file . I appreciate any help , thanks .

Is the file 'TextSub 2.23.vdf' in the VirtualDub\Plugins folder.
