camera shows up on device instead of ipod

I have been to numerous sites and explanations and did a couple of things that Apple suggested but I can't get the ipod to show itself in the device when you click on my computer. I am using windows xp. every time it shows the name of the ipod but there is a camera picture next to it. I want to go to the hidden files of the ipod for my music. I have download the newest updates from itunes but nothing works. the camera still comes up. can anyone help me.
