ipod touch 3rd gen 8gb restoring problem

Hey guys first off, thanks for any help you can give here.

I got a 8gb touch that every time i go to restore it will download the software and then it tries to i suppose put it on the device then i get an unknown error has occoured(9) and it kicks me to start the process all over again?

any ideas?

I never changed my software in 5+ yrs. My nano still works (barely) the controls are wearing out. Otherwise it works just fine. The most common problems are 1)damage 2) download problems 3) security issues (copying tunes illegally) Those issues take up 90% of the posts on this board.
