I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 I want to put linux on it. I just put ubuntu 9.04 on it. it was runnin well and then stopped working. whats the best linux to put on it ? xbuntu ?
Ubuntu should b fine on it. What kinda of error are u getting. It could just be a faulty install u may just need to re-install thats all.
it was working grand and all no problems. only problem i had on it was trying to install codecs to play dvds. they thing stopped working when booting up a graphic error. tryed everthing and noting.
Ive had to format that hard drive. and goin to put another linux on it. it was working fine on testing with ubuntu
There are others out there and the other one that comes to mind is Ubuntu netbook remix you can find a version for desktops it does work as well and Ubuntu should have just released a new version of Ubuntu as well. But i am sure if u do a Google search for other Linux operating systems you can find another alternative.
if you notice "Netbook" in Ubuntu Netbook Remix it says its not meant for desktop computers, or notebooks for that matter, but for that netbook crap(my point of view). stick with ubuntu, and install vlc or mplayer and you get full codec support with them. or try puppy which comes with multimedia support, runs live which means you dont have to install it on your hard drive. it runs directly from cd or usb stick.
yeah, just search for any linux distro you might like, but really any should run fine. I haven't really seen/heard/used a "bad" linux distro
can't get it too boot to anything now it the lights just go one. I changed the boot sequence. is there any way i can get it too boot now ?
dell use stock hardware.. dell + linux = good combination... usually. work out why it doesn't boot.. it needs to boot from cd. Reset the bios.. there is a white or red jumper near the battery down on the lower right side. then del or f2 (depending on bios version) to det cd-rom as first boot device. debian stable netinstall will find and install everything (unlike ubuntu crippled by design for usa market and full of mono dependencies), add debian multimedia repos to your sources.. no more problems with dvd's.
which version do I install ? I got it bootin up. will the 02 broadband wireless modem connect automaticly when I plug it in with debian Arch alpha: 295 packages, 20670 files. Arch amd64: 332 packages, 21678 files. Arch armel: 267 packages, 20443 files. Arch hppa: 299 packages, 20673 files. Arch i386: 334 packages, 21737 files. Arch ia64: 308 packages, 21179 files. Arch mipsel: 265 packages, 20312 files. Arch powerpc: 306 packages, 20797 files. Arch sparc: 294 packages, 20565 files.
if it's 32 bit you want the i386 .. though you really should look that up for yourself.. wireless thing?.. not a clue.. again do some research.
