Have my laptop here I formated it fully and its blank. want to put linux on to it. What one works best ? I tryed xbuntu that didnt work I didnt try ubuntu just want the best one that will work fully with the laptop... Any Suggestions.... ? maybe fedora
from what I can gather only certain linux versions work with this type of toshiba. xbuntu didnt work at all. Downloadin open suse and fedora 11 and Ked four live. i'll give them a try. just want a linux that works great with it, Is it because its a new laptop is that why some linux dont work with it. I really thought xbuntu would work
You mean there's certain things about the laptop that don't work in linux, right ?, (maybe wifi, as in not working automatically, for instance), but surely just running linux itself should work, can't see what the kind of laptop would have to do with linux itself not working..
when I was installing xbuntu it was grand at the start then it went flashin graphics during install then shut off. well did I bit of google research and came up that certain linux only work with it. goin to start next with open suse or fedora 11. and I'll picking the right on that works with the dual core processor and all
OK, keep us posted. You can also try my favourite distro, Puppy Linux. Designed for ancient, slow computers, it's also great for new modern kit.
installed fedora. it runs great looks great and is amazing. only problem have't a clue how to install programs what so ever looks like you have to use command line to install anything. would ubuntu be better for that ?
What did you put linux on the machine for ?, if it's to learn about linux you should endeavour to get up to speed with the command line. At the end of the day the gui tools are only calling command line programs 'under the hood' and linux being linux means that sometimes those commands get confused/stuck sometimes, and gui's are less than helpful in such instances.. Don't get me wrong, i love the simplicity of gui's, however such things take away thinking and knowledge (just look at what mass use of Windows in the workplace has done to IT skills - someone's mouse breaks and they have a nervous breakdown) so it's vital to keep the brain cells working with the command line. Just my opinion of course... i'm certainly no anti-Microsoft person, i just don't like everything being abstracted away behind gui's.
is ubuntu not more user friendly. just starting off with linux. only want to use it for the net and watchin dvds and videos. didnt think it would be so hard to install vlc or m player or anything in that matter. just can't seem to install anything
See what i mean about gui's taking away thinking With Puppy Linux i didn't have to install anything, absolutely everything needed for such things were installed by default. But i've used quite a few other linuxes and there's various different ways to install programs. As to Ubuntu, it's apparently very well supported, that'll be because everyone and his brother thinks Ubuntu is the only linux out there.. Anyways, i've only used Ubuntu a little bit, it's just as easy as any other linux to install/maintain. using linux mint the last 4 weeks its great. the girlfriend says the internet runs slower on linux lint ? any idea why ? Ive noticed it myself
Yes it is well documented re interfering with certain linux distributions. IPV6 isn't yet mainstream 'out there' and it won't be in use on your own network so isn't needed. edit- oh hang on, it looks like IPV6 shouldn't be on by default in Mint anyways - http://www.pcmech.com/article/linux-mint-the-ubuntu-that-should-have-been/
As i say it looks like it's not installed. You can check at the command line, open up a terminal or console and type 'ifconfig -a'. If IPV6 is running you'll see it in the output from ifconfig, but it sounds like it's running, in which case something else is slowing down your browsing.
didnt see it written there at all now i checked. what could it be ? as it does seem to run faster on windows well a little
*yawn* .. seems slower.. numbers baby.. give us hard facts, not "my girlfriend thinks it seems slower" probably related to dns settings IF there is any difference.. I bet mint does it properly.. check them.
